Eugenio Torelli Viollier , director of Lombardy and
Riccardo Pavesi, publisher of the same, decided to start a new newspaper. The first issue was announced by newsboys in Piazza della Scala Sunday, March 5, 1876, the date 5-6 March. For the launch was chosen on the first Sunday of Lent (traditionally the day the newspapers did not leave Milan).
