Eugenio Torelli Viollier , director of Lombardy and
Riccardo Pavesi, publisher of the same, decided to start a new newspaper. The first issue was announced by newsboys in Piazza della Scala Sunday, March 5, 1876, the date 5-6 March. For the launch was chosen on the first Sunday of Lent (traditionally the day the newspapers did not leave Milan). The Constitution guarantees a secular state and the abolition of the death penalty: the Roman Republic was the second state the world to abolish it, after the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The Roman Republic was born in the context of the liberal movements of 1848 that involved many European countries. On November 24, 1848 Pope Pius XI from Rome to Gaeta fled after the riots in the square followed the assassination of Prime Minister Pellegrino Rossi. After the creation of a provisional junta took place Jan. 21 elections by direct universal suffrage for men. On February 9, was passed a decree declaring that the temporal power, while recognizing the special Guarantees Church. Thus was born the Roman Republic, which was initially led by a triumvirate of Mazzini, Saffi, and Armellini, while the defense of Rome was entrusted to Garibaldi. The Roman Republic had short life and his experience ended July 4, 1849 with the intervention of French troops.
